Consultation has concluded.

Kingston’s Community Grants play a vital role in our community, supporting various initiatives spanning health, welfare, sports, recreation, arts, culture, education, and the environment. To offer a snapshot, we allocated approximately $1.8 million in the last year alone to benefit more than 250 organisations, groups, and individuals.

However, given that our current grants model has remained unchanged for 20 years, it's time for a refresh. Our primary goal with this review is to ensure our grants model is as fair, inclusive, efficient, and beneficial as ever for the community.

We engaged an independent consultant, Beio Consulting, to review our current Community Grants program and provide recommendations on a future model.

The proposed Community Grants model has been informed by a review of our current grants program audit reports, including the Fraud Control Over Local Government Grants report by the Victorian Auditor General’s Office (VAGO), benchmarking against other local government grants programs and the first stage of community consultation where more than 200 people contributed their perspectives. The local Kingston context has also been applied to the independent consultant’s recommendation.

Proposed key changes:

  • Reduce grant categories from 10 down to 5.
  • Merge and adapt specific grants for better alignment with community needs.
  • Increase the frequency of specific grants to offer more regular support.
  • Streamline the application and review process for user-friendliness.

What will remain unchanged:

  • Total grants budget stays the same.
  • Grants that have received approval up to this point will remain unaffected.
  • Kingston Charitable Fund retains its independent status.
